The 405th TFW flew three
UH-1Fs and a single UH-1P until 1987 for range support out of Luke AFB Arizona. The were taken out of service and flown to
AMARC around August 1987. We had tail numbers
924 and
926. I arrived there in 1983, and we flew under the 405 Tac Ftr Wing. The 405th was a training wing in essence with five F-15 trng sq's. The 461st, the 555th, the the 550th, the 425th and somebody else. We also had an attached trng sq located at
Williams AFB in Tempe. They flew T-38s. Around 1980 or so I believe the 405th Hueys were assigned to the 58th Trng Wing also at Luke. That wing at that time was in the process of converting from F-4s into F-16s. About the time I arrived at Luke the 405th Wing was transitioning from F-4s into F-15s. We also had a reserve special operations squadron flying
CH-3s. They left around early 87 I believe and they were designated the
302nd SOS. We actually logged night time hours for NVG training as our squadron didn't have the requirement nor the equipment. If I remember correctly the H-3s went to AMARC and then were transferred to
Tunisia I know the 302 had 6 AC , I know for a fact that one of their H-3s ended up in the northwest working for a logging outfit.
