Chartres has been an airfield since 1909, one of the oldest in France. The Air Force used the base until military flying ceased here on 1 Oct 1953 (partly in response to objections about the proximity of the base to the grand Cathedral nearby). It was used as a storage site by the Musée de l Air until 1986/7 and more generally by the Armée de l Air until 1997 when it passed entirely into civilian general aviation operations.
