History of this Location | |
Opened in Jan 1917 as a Royal Flying Corps base. RAF Martlesham Heath had a distinguished career as a fighter and bomber escort base, initially RAF and then as USAAF, during World War II. The RAF base closed in 1963. Much of the site and most of the main runways have now been built over.
The site was the Post Office Engineering (and latterly, British Telecom) main R&D site where important radio, wired and IT work was done.
From Oct 2000, Suffolk Constabulary has based its Air Support Unit at Martlesham Heath until summer 2009.
