Work started in 1937 on what was to be a grass runway base. The RAF had moved in during 1938 but the airfield passed over to the USAAF in 1942 and hard runways were built. At the end of WWII the base was handed back to the RAF and it subsequently supported British relief flights for the Berlin Air Lift of 1948/49. The base was passed to the British Army toward the end of Aug 1969 as a training centre; this was closed in Aug 2012.
