Canadian Forces Station Alert is a signals intelligence intercept facility in Alert, Nunavut. It is the most Northern permanently inhabited settlement in the world.
The area is named after the British Nares Arctic Expedition of 1875/76. Sir George Strong Nares was captain of HMS Alert and H F Stephenson was in command of HMS Discovery. It explored the east coast of Ellesmere Island and western Greenland on its way to the North Pole (the expedition members were forced to stop c 400 miles short).
