Built in 1942 to produce fixed wing training aircraft for the USAAF. After a period of civilian use following WWII, Bell leased the site and produced helicopters for the US Army from 1950 - with significant acceleration in Feb 1951 - and in 1952, administration was transferred from the US Army to the US Navy.

The site with its main north-south runway was further expanded along that line and to the north east, across a culverted stream in 1965 (assembly hangar and fuel storage) and again in 1969 (extending the paint shop). In 1967 the plant had reverted to US Army control. Pilot and maintenance training continued until 1970 when new facilities were built in Hurst, southwest of the site.

Bell was still producing helicopters here in 1984. By 2002 however the helicopter plant had been closed and significant demolition had taken place.
