Runways were established here in 1918, although the main development was in the run up to WWII when RAF Hemswell became part of RAF 5 Group (Bomber Command). The RAF left the site in 1974, although flying operations had ceased around 1956.
The Bomber County Aviation Museum moved its collection here in early 1989 from its previous site near Cleethorpes. The museum was eventually closed in Spring 2005 and the collection dispersed, although approx half of the airframes went to Doncaster.
