The Royal Naval Training Establishment Shotley was created in 1905 (although some building on the site had begun in 1902). The name HMS Ganges had been held by a number of training ships for young men entering the Royal Navy. By 1927, the shore establishment itself had been commissioned as HMS Ganges.
The establishment trained over 100,000 boys before it was finally closed in 1976, with its function being taken over by HMS Raleigh in Cornwall.
The site had been used for Police residential courses up until at least 2007.
