Opened as a gliding school in 1933 and became a Luftwaffe base 1939-1945. The USAFE gave up the base in 1958 and the newly formed Luftwaffe established its officer school (Fachhochschule) here. Military flying ceased in 1991 and all flying stopped in 1998 when the nearby university (with its joint services colleges) expanded into the site.
