More than 200 US Army UH-1C were converted to the UH-1M Gunship model before 1970 and were used in Vietnam before being replaced by the purpose built AH-1 Cobra.
It was recognised as an end of life model around 1993 when maintenance became more expensive with only the Missile Range at White Sands operating the type. In 1995, a decision was reached to remove them from US service.
The type received a second lease of life, as the El Salvador Air Force was able to use at least twenty four of them in a counter-insurgency role.
