The YH-21 / PD-22 was nicknamed the Workhorse by the US Air Force, who received 18 from Feb - Aug 1953. This was the first production batch of H-21s [USAF serials 50-1231 through 50-1248] and they were considered both utility and rescue helicopters. It was powered by the Curtis-Wright R-1820-103 Cyclone radial engine derated to 1150 HP. First Flight of 50-1231 was 11 April, 1951.
