The RAF were interested in slow moving, light aircraft which could assist them in calibrating radar stations (and later, airborne radar sets) and the British Purchasing Commission (influenced by the Royal Navy, which took 2) obtained 5x Pitcairn PA-39 autogiros, which had been converted from the company PA-18 model.
In Apr and May 1942 trials were undertaken in the USA aboard various ships and a batch of 5 were sent to the UK on an eastbound convoy. Three were lost when their ship was torpedoed in mid-Atlantic.
