With the support of a team of local companies which includes Airbus and engine manufacturer Honeywell, Boeing will deliver 60 heavy-lift helicopters under a contract reportedly worth over $4 billion.
Deliveries are scheduled to start in 2023 and end in 2029.
The Chinook defeated the Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion which recently entered service with the US Marine Corps and was also chosen by Israel.
Although the CH-53K might have been the logical choice as a replacement for the CH-53, the Chinook is used by all major NATO countries thus ensuring the benefits of interoperability, particularly with the Netherlands.
