DRF Luftrettung, April 28, 2020 - Effective immediately, “Christoph Berlin” is also equipped with an EpiShuttle.

With this isolation stretcher, patients with highly infectious diseases can be transported like in an isolation ward.

This protects crew and patients alike. In addition, the Berlin air rescuers now save valuable time and can make the helicopter available for missions again very quickly, as the particularly complex disinfection of the helicopter after missions with corona infected people but also other infectious patients is not necessary.

Last week, the medical crew at the station received instructions and training on how to use the EpiShuttle properly and safely .

Berlin's Senator for Health Dilek Kalayci visited the DRF Luftrettung station at the Berlin-Marzahn Accident Hospital on Monday and had the crew explain the advantages of the EpiShuttle to her. Professor Dr. Axel Ekkernkamp (managing director and medical director), Markus Gondert (senior physician at the rescue center) and Hans-Joachim Janssen (senior physician at the Covid-19 intensive care unit) from BG Klinikum Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin were present.

The innovative EpiShuttle allows patients with highly infectious diseases, such as corona infection, to be transported in an isolation ward: The person lies under a transparent cover, can be connected to an intensive care ventilator via airtight access points and can be monitored and treated at the same time.

The medical crews of the stations are familiarized in detail with the EpiShuttle in advance, including through an extensive deployment concept that takes a wide variety of scenarios into account. This means that the crews are able to carry out transports with the EpiShuttle in accordance with the highest safety standards when indicated.
