Helis, April 25, 2019 - Egypt may have placed a first order for up to 20 Leonardo AW149 helicopters.
French news website La Tribune reported that Egypt officially notified France that it had chosen to award the contract to Leonardo. The french were hoping to sell the NHIndustries NH90.
NHindustries is a joint-venture owned by Leonardo, Airbus and Fokker.
The Egyptian Navy plans to use the helicopters with its new amphibious assault ships of the Mistral class Gamal Abdel Nasser (L1010) and Anwar El Sadat (L1020) both built in France.
The AW149 that flew for the first time in 2009 so far has been ordered only by Thailand, which uses five aircraft in the Army. The civil variant AW189 has been more popular and around 60 helicopters are used by operators serving the offshore oil and gas industry and in the public service in the UK, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan.
