Ministero della Difesa, March 26, 2026 - On Tuesday, March 24, 2026, a ceremony was held at the 15th Wing base in Cervia (Ravenna) to mark the centenary of the 83rd Search and Rescue (SAR) Squadron—a milestone that reflects one hundred years of operational evolution, dedication, and service to the nation.

Over the past century, the 83rd Squadron has played a fundamental role in the search and rescue capabilities of the Italian Air Force, continuously adapting to evolving operational environments. Its history spans from early aerial reconnaissance missions to transoceanic flights, from seaplane rescue units to modern Combat SAR operations. This journey has been defined by ongoing technological and training innovation, always guided by a commitment to public service.

Operational figures highlight the squadron’s impact: more than 800 rescue missions completed and thousands of lives saved, often under extremely challenging weather and environmental conditions—demonstrating the high level of readiness and professionalism of its crews.

The ceremony was widely attended, with the presence of civil and military authorities, as well as current and former members of the unit, united by a strong sense of belonging and shared operational experience.

During the event, Major Simone Agostinelli, Commander of the 83rd SAR Squadron; Colonel Antonio Viola, Commander of the 15th Wing; and Air Division General Alessandro De Lorenzo, Commander of the Air Mobility and Support Forces Command, highlighted the excellence of the personnel and the value of a tradition built over time. Special tribute was paid to those who lost their lives in the line of duty, recognized as enduring examples of dedication and sacrifice.

Among the most significant moments of the day were the unveiling of the official Centenary logo and a special commemorative aircraft livery, both symbolizing the unit’s identity and history.

The ceremony concluded with two HH-139 helicopters flying in formation over the Cervia base, performing the traditional “flag pass” to the notes of the National Anthem.

With this important milestone, the 83rd SAR Squadron enters its second century of operations, reaffirming its status as one of the most active and representative units of the Italian Air Force—always ready to respond with speed and expertise, faithful to its motto: “So that others may live.”
