Forca Aerea Brasileira, April 23, 2020 - 10 years ago, on April 17, 2010, the official ceremony of incorporation of Mi-35M helicopters into the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) took place at the Porto Velho Air Base (RO).

The activities of the handover ceremony began the day before, with the holding of a Thanksgiving Mass and the Launching of the Fundamental Stone of the Poti Squadron (2nd/8th GAV), definitively marking the presence of the Air Unit in the capital of Rondônia.

The 12 helicopters received by the Squadron were delivered in four batches of three aircraft each and currently accumulate more than 8,000 flight hours.

The aircraft represents a huge operational gain for Esquadrão Poti, which started flying a genuinely attack aircraft, filling an operational gap that existed in the FAB before its arrival.

Developed from the Russian Mi-24 helicopter, the Mi-35M incorporates several technological innovations, maintaining the main characteristics of its predecessor, which are firepower, armor and robustness. The helicopter is capable of performing missions in low-visibility environments, day and night. It has a high-capacity 23mm cannon attached to a movable turret under its nose and can also be configured with Ataka air-to-surface missile launchers and 80mm unguided rockets.

The use of weapons is carried out with the aid of the GOES-342 Gyro-stabilized electronic and optical system, which allows the detection and identification of targets by means of TV or thermal image. Among its defensive systems, we can highlight the RWR ( Radar Warning Receiver ), IR (infrared) jammer and flare , in addition to the heat suppressor at the output of the engines.

The Commander of the 2nd/8th GAV, Aviator Lieutenant Colonel Márcio André Almeida Coutinho, says that the deployment of the AH- 2 Saber is a very important milestone for all the members of the Poti Squadron.

According to him, these ten years were marked by the challenge of operating such a unique machine, possessing a high military capacity and with the possibility of being used in different scenarios. "Participating in this history is a source of great pride for all crew members, maintenance and armament personnel who have already worked or continue to work in the AH-2 operation in Brazil. The determined and committed profile of the members of this select group guarantees the maintenance and development of the necessary capacities to assist the FAB in the fulfillment of its mission", concludes the Officer.
