Canadian Certification for the PW206B3 Engine

Pratt & Whitney Canada, July 07, 2014 - Transport Canada has given its seal of approval to Pratt & Whitney Canada’s new PW206B3 engine, selected to power the new Airbus Helicopters EC135 P3 light, multipurpose twin-engine helicopter.

The updated EC135 P3, announced at Heli-Expo 2013, is scheduled to enter service in the first quarter of 2015.

The PW206B3, which received Transport Canada certification on June 20, 2014, is a growth variant of the highly successful PW206B2, an advanced-technology engine with a solid reputation for reliability.

“The PW206B3 has the same engine architecture as the PW206B2, which is designed for ease of maintenance, and offers up to 10 percent more thermal takeoff power in hot and high conditions,” noted Richard Dussault, vice president, marketing, P&WC.

The PW206B3 engine has automatic start and automatic power sharing between the two engines. It offers the lowest emission levels in its class and competitive maintenance costs. The engine also offers a 4,000-hour TBO with on-condition HSI (hot-section inspection).

The PW206B3 is the latest member of the PW200 engine family, regarded as the industry’s benchmark engine for the new generation of light twin-engine helicopters in the 600 shp to 700 shp class. Its superior engine performance, low operating costs and an unparalleled customer support network make it the engine of choice to power all modern light twin helicopters, which are enjoying strong demand in emergency medical services, utility, law enforcement and general business.

The reliability of the PW200 family of engines is unmatched at rates that are ten times better than the industry standard. In addition, electronic control allows for reduced pilot workload, ease of helicopter operation and a safe one-engine inoperative pilot training feature.

“Our helicopter engine deliveries have more than tripled in the past decade based largely on the investments we have made across multiple engine models, including the PW200,” noted Dussault.

“In addition to the most advanced engine technology available, helicopter operators depend heavily on our world-class customer service and worldwide network. At the heart of our service network are 100 field service representatives, located across the globe, bringing OEM expertise to our customers and backed by a comprehensive array of service personnel and diagnostics tools to ensure that our engines operate safely and reliably.”
