Helis, December 11, 2019 - Ahead of schedule, PZL Świdnik plant in Poland completed the first structural components for the AW101 helicopter for the Polish Navy.
The completed parts include the lower front fuselage (pilots floor) and part of the cabin ceiling. All parts will be transported to the AW101 assembly line at Yeovil, UK.
PZL-Świdnik, part of the Leonardo Group, obtained a $428M contract on April 2019 for 4 AW101 maritime helicopters along with training and logistics against fierce competition from the Sikorsky Black Hawk (being produced in Poland by PZL Mielec since 2010) and the Airbus H225M.
The helicopters will provide Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) and Antisubmarine warfare (ASW) capabilities.
Contract is expected to be completed by 2022.
