Smart Mission Display for Helicopters
ESG, February 14, 2019 - ESG Elektroniksystem-und Logistik-GmbH has developed the Smart Mission Display (SMD), a new, integrated mission system for use by airborne police, border guard and military forces.

The display's reduced external profile of 9.82 x 6.2 inches allow integration in both, cockpit and passenger areas. Its compact size allows mobile usage with an optional leg mounted system.

The fully capsuled SMD features a high-resolution 9-inch (HD) sunlight and/or night vision goggle compatible touchscreen, a high performing processor and a removable battery.

Extensive environmental testing of the display under MIL-STD-810G, RTCA DO-160G, MIL-STD-704F and MIL-STD-461G has already been completed.

Other distinguishing features versus commercial tablets include military connectors, battery certification under UN 38.3 and IEC 62133 and a manufacturing process in line with aviation standards.

The ESG Mission Management Software Framework "ESGMM" for the SMD is available in different variants. ESGMM is optimized for high-performance video management with a low latency. Tactical digital mapping and augmented reality – TaViO – with tailored overlays are complemented with a wide range of data management and sensor fusion capabilities as well as typical Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) functionalities. The software has an ergonomic user interface, optimised for touchscreen operation with gloves.

Depending on the mission requirements, specific modules are available for Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR), Digitally Aided Close Air Support (DACAS), Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) and Search and Rescue Oper-ations (SAR). Processing of data for raised confidentiality-levels (up to “secret”) can optionally by supported.

The SMD has the typical interfaces to electro-optical systems (EOS), navigation devices (FMS/GPS), automatic identification systems (AIS), data radios and satellite communication systems (SATCOM).

Whether as a compact mission system for single-engine police helicopters or as part of a system network for mission aircraft with connected operator workstations and ground stations, the SMD is expandable and adaptable to different mission requirements.
