Helis, October 15, 2021 - Romania Air Ambulance and Rescue national service (SMURD, Serviciul Mobil de Urgență, Reanimare și Descarcerare) ordered 4 Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopters valued € 93M plus 8 options.
If chosen, the entire contract for 12 helicopters is to be worth € 272.84 million and completed in 4 years.
The Black Hawk won against two European competitors, Leonardo which offered 12 helicopters valued € 299 M and Airbus Helicopters which offered 10 helicopters. In both cases the model option was not mentioned.
However, the contract is not final yet as Leonardo has filed an appeal. The Romanian National Appeals Office is expected to issue a decision in the coming weeks.
The S-70i helicopter is manufactured by PLZ-Mielec in Poland, a Lockheed-Martin subsidiary.
SMURD currently operates Airbus H135T3/P3 and Eurocopter EC135T2+ from eight operating bases located in Bucharest, Târgu Mureș, Iași, Arad, Craiova, Constanța, Galați and Jibou.
The new helicopters are planned to be used in search and rescue, medical evacuation, firefighting and capable of over-water operations.
