Helis, October 22, 2019 - The University of Michigan Hospital’ air ambulance service, Survival Flight, operates three Eurocopter (now Airbus) EC155B1 helicopters.
Metro Aviation of Shreveport, Louisiana flies and maintains the helicopters on behalf Survival Flight and for many others hospitals across the country. In addition to this, Metro’ Completion Center designs and installs customizable kits.
Since U-M was the first customer for the EC155, Metro first built a scale model of the cabin (pictured) for Survival Flight to review before completion of the aircraft began.
Survival Flight introduced the EC155 in the U.S. Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) market back in 2011 but was already used as a rescue and ambulance helicopter worldwide. First flew in 1999, it is an upgraded variant of the previous AS365N3 with a larger cabin, a four-axis autopilot in a glass cockpit and a five-blade Spheriflex main rotor powered by two FADEC Arriel 2C2 engines of 938 shp each.
Survival Flight requested a special EMS configuration for these helicopters which Metro Aviation designed and installed allowing the EC155 to carry two patients in stretchers and three attendant seats.
