As the December 1974 dry season offensives began to pay off, North Vietnam was poised to make major gains in the South. Da Nang and Hue fell at the end of March 1975 and British ships were ordered from a Far East group deployment and from Singapore to assist in the evacuation of British and Commonwealth nationals. By the end of April, the ships had left for Singapore and Saigon had fallen, effectively ending the South Vietnam war.
