Hurricane Matthew swept through southern Haiti and the Domincan Republic on 4 Oct and arched around past the Bahamas towards eastern Florida and onwards up the US coast until it made landfall in South Carolina around 0800 (local) on 8 Oct.
The USA mobilised Disaster Relief assets for Haiti and the UK sent a charter flight full of aid kits and ordered the Royal Navy to direct a support ship to the Bahamas.
