The
United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor was established by UNSCR 1272, following significant progress in talks between Indonesia and Portugal about the future of East Timor. The population had rejected becoming a partially autonomous state within Indonesia and following outbreaks of violence, UNTAET was set up to maintain the peace and transition the territory towards independence.
Units of the Australian Defence Forces and the Portuguese military were the major contributors to this UN mission.
