From around 20 May, a storm developed in the Caribbean and by early June, almost 130cm rain had fallen over southern Jamaica. Sink holes in its karst landscape were unable to drain fast enough, causing severe flooding and landslides in a major food producing area, destroying crops and livestock and rendering tens of thousands homeless.
The atmospheric disturbance went on to become Tropical Storm
Andrew.
Canada, Germany, UK and USA were early relief providers, with the UK sending ships and 3 helicopters to southern Jamaica.
