1962-1964, I was stationed at Goose Bay in the 54th ARS from Jan 1962 to May 1964. I was a assistant crew chief on a C54 and later on a SA-16 aircraft.Colonel Mudge was the Sqadron commander at the time. Went on several. Rescue missions.
Jul64, I reported to Det. 2, 54th Air Rescue Squadron about and was there until December 31, 1965. Was an A3C right out of helicopter school and made A2C up there. Was crew chief on 62-4530. We were in the MATS/MAC hangar down there by the fire station, flight line cafeteria. Left there and went to helicopter pilot training which had just moved from Stead AFB to Sheppard AFB. 1964-1966, I was stationed in Detachment 2, 54th Air rescue Squadron, Earnest Harmon AFB Newfoundland, two HH-43B helicopters, 62-4529 and 62-4530
1966, I began working with the 54 ARRS at Goose AFB. I worked in the orderly room with 1st Sergeant BD Elliott and Lt Col Erskine Wigley. We were in the process of phasing out C-54 aircraft for 5 new HC-130 aircraft. We also had 1 helicopter, I cannot remember the model. After living 18 months in Goose Bay Labrador, I was part of a small advance party that set up new operations at Pease AFB in Portsmouth, NH.
1968, before moving to Peace AFB, the 54th ARRS was based in Goose Bay Labrador. I was with the unit there for over a year and moved with them to Peace before being medically discharged in August 1968. I was an Airborne Navigation Systems tech on the HC-130H.
1969-1970, I as stationed with the 54th ARRS at Pease AFB. Only aircraft stationed/operated by the 54th were five (5ea) C-130H's. No helicopters. The 54th was a 'tenant' squadron on base, for B52's of the 509th Air Bombardment Wing. Regards.
