Established July 31, 1987, the 3rd Battalion, 140th Aviation Regiment is part of the California Army National Guard. It organized on 1 October 1987 from existing units to consist of the 1st Battalion and Companies Delta, Echo, Fox, Golf and elements of the 40th Infantry Division. The unit has reorganized numerous times and as of 2018 is named 3rd Battalion, 140th Aviation Regiment (Security and Support).

Since its creation the 3-140th have responded to a wide array of emergencies to include, wildfires, floods, search and rescues, and deployments.
