33F was created 01 August 1956 and remain operational until dissolved 01 October 1999. Was reactivated again on 08 December 2011 with the introduction of the NH.90 Caiman in the Marine Nationale service
The main mission of 33F is to perform naval combat missions (antisurface and antisubmarine warfare) embarked aboard FREMM type frigates with an important secondary role of public search and rescue (SAR) from its base at Lanveoc near Brest. Between reception of the NH90 at end of 2011 through August 2019, 33F carried out 573 sea rescue missions helping 425 people

33F transitioned to the SA.321 Super Frelon during 1979, when 5 airframes transferred in from Pacific based 27S, to replace the ageing HSS-1.
33F specialises in deploying aboard Aquitaine class frigates.
