The air force formed its Escuadron de Helicopteros in 1969 when it received their first helicopters, two Hiller FH-100 which were reinforced in the 1970s with the arrival of Lama and Alouette III from France. In 1981, the United States relax its policy on human rights abuses and the first Bell Hueys were delivered in a moment when the internal fight against the the Frente Farabundo Marti para la Liberacion Nacional (FMLN) movement intensified.
In February 1986 the unit was renamed as Grupo de Helicopteros (Helicopters Group) but was back as Squadron in 2000.
