357th AvnDet Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe
US Army flight detachment allocated to VIP transport for Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), the central command of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) military forces.
Created in 1951 in Rocquencourt France relocated to Casteau, near Mons Belgium since 1967.
Since 2003 controls all NATO operations worldwide.
1967, I was one of five Warrant Officers and a Major who established this unit in Belgium. Our CO was Major Dave Larcombe. Besides myself,, the other WO's were Bob Cronin, Tom Newman, Al Brown, and Jerry Langsford. It was great duty. Our original designation was SHAPE Army Flight Detachment. The 357th designation came later. Our primary duty was to support general Lyman Lemnitzer. As long as we kept Lem happy, the army left us alone. Lem outranked every general in NATO.
