HT-18 | I received my wings at Ellyson Field on February 5, 1971, after completing advanced training in the UH-1D. The aircraft were painted in green camouflage and I was told they were formerly combat aircraft recycled through ARADMAC re-work. Some still had bullet holes in the tail cone, patched with green stickers! I received one flight in the TH-1L because it had a full suite of navaids (ILS, TACAN, etc.) Why doesn't this website show the UH-1Ds? Are you not proud of your COMPLETE history?nnCAPT Mont J. 116th AHC | 1971-1973, I was on my way to Vietnam in October of 1971 via Ft. Lewis overseas replacement center. My orders were subsequently rescinded and I was reassigned to HHC USArmy training center. Ft.Lewis was a basic training post at the time. So all the MP's, finance clerks, cooks, and anyone with an aviation MOS was in this company. The airfield had about 6 hueys, a few Mohawk fixed wing, and some Helicopters that looked like the ones in the Mash series. I remember one going down and the pilots reporting to base ops at the airfield. They both were pretty banged up. When the 10th Aviation was established at Ft. Lewis. Those of us who worked at Gray Army Airfield were reassigned to the 10th HHC or the 116th AHC depending on our MOS. Helicopters were being overhauled I believe in El Paso, TX. Crews were sent down there and flew the birds to Lewis. I have no idea how many cases of Coors beer I helped unload from those flights. One could not get Coors in WA. State. Here are some of the people I worked with at base ops at the airfield. Cpt Lofgren, Cpt. Wiley, WO Head, Cpt Oury, Cpt Flarhety, Sp4 Hoppie, Sp4 Elliott, Sp4 Hudson, Sp4 Santa Jaramillo, Ltc Carlson, Col Denend, and Ssg Dotson. | 116th AHC | 1971-1973, I was on my way to Vietnam in October of 1971 via Ft. 116th AHC | 1971-73, I was stationed at Ft Lewis. The Army brought the 10th Aviation colors back to Ft Lewis. All of us that had aviation MOS's were reassigned to the 10 Aviation. The 10th ran Gray Army Airfield even when the 9th Infantry was established there. The war was winding down and the army did not know what to do with a lot of us. My MOS was 67N20 UH-1 Helicopter repairman. I never worked in my trained MOS the duration of my enlistment. The west coast installations were way better than those cockroach infested posts like Ft Eustis, VA. | 116th AHC | 1971-73, I was stationed at Ft Lewis. MCAF Quantico / Turner Field | In List of helicopters at Quantico is missing the SH-3G. You have a link on your site showing MX-15, # 148043 around 1973 at Quantico. This aircraft was the only green side aircraft that was stationed on the Presidential (white top) side. It was the white bird at Anacostia before the VH-3Ds were placed into service. There were 3 SH-3G's at HMX from the early 1970s. When MX-15, 148043 went over to the white top side, a 4th SH-3G was taken from the Navy at NAS Norfolk. | MCAF Quantico / Turner Field | In List of helicopters at Quantico is missing the SH-3G.
