Jungle base at river junction, Nanga Gaat, Sarawak | ||
ICAO: | IATA: | |
Elevation: 125 feet |
Established as a tactical forward operating base, deep into Sarawak, approaching the Indonesian (Kalimantan province) border, towards the end of 1963 from an 845 NAS initiative. At the confluence of two significant rivers (the Baleh and the Gaat) draining the highland interior, as well as being able to receive fuel drums by water, it also helped aircrew find the base, given the poor state of charts at the time. This refueling stop helped to extend the on-mission time of the helicopter force and allow them to increase payload lift by operating with less fuel and return to replenish. During 1966, the jungle site was named RNAS Tauari.
