Mineralisation has been known in this area since c 1910 when small scale surface working of lead began. It wasnt until 1955 that geologists realised there was much greater potential for lead, zinc and silver in the area. Development was slow and initially underground with a pilot in 1977, followed by a commitment to extract in 1992, with the first of this ore produced in Jun 1995. Improvements on ore processing and reduction of underground production led to the decision to open cast from c 2009.

The airport has been in place since at least 2005 and the main runway was extended in 2007/08.

During Mar 2019, the airport saw its busiest few days ever, in the evacuation of the area pending the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Trevor, which in the event passed a little to the east on 25 Mar.
