The Cygnus field was discovered in 1988 and evaluation took until Jul 2010 to determine that it was one of the most significant gas finds in the UK Southern North Sea.
Cygnus Alpha consists of a drilling platform, an accommodation rig and a processing centre, all joined by bridge walkways. Development work began around Aug 2012 and production started in Dec 2016. The gas from Cygnus A and B (c 3.75nm to the NW of Alpha) is piped via the Esmond Transmission System, to Bacton in Norfolk.
