The Long Range Weapons Establishment (LRWE) was a joint UK / Australian organisation created on 1 Apr 1947 to address development and testing needs for long range missiles, after WWII.
The airstrip here was located near the launch and instrumentation sites, although ground stations were spread along a north westerly track right up towards Talgarno in the north of Western Australia - in the impact area, post-ballistic phase. Operations have significantly wound down since the 1970s.
