Helis, June 16, 2020 - The National Aeronaval Service (SENAN), which manages the air component of the Public Forces of the Republic of Panama, react to the news today when high-ranking officials were accused at the anti-corruption office for fraudulent operations with the 6 AW139 helicopters that were acquired from the Italian company Finmeccanica (now Leonardo SpA) in 2010.
The complaint specifically accuses SENAN senior officers for having allowed the guarantees of the aircraft that arrived in the country from 2013 to expire. Supposedly this would have occurred in a "premeditated" and "willful" manner with the aim of obtaining subsequent contracts which compel the state to spend more money.
The complainant, attorney Justino González, points out that SENAN officials ignored multiple mandatory bulletins issued by the manufacturer regarding initial maintenance which should have been covered by contract. It is also highlighted that in 2016, once the guarantee expired, SENAN awarded maintenance to a third company in a “fraudulent” manner in order to commit the crimes reported.
The complaint further highlights that at least one of the 6 aircraft is in such poor condition that is no longer salvageable.
