Boeing, April 20, 2024 - Crew members of the CV-22, a variant of the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey, are better able to train for high-risk aerial encounters in a low-risk environment thanks to some smart technology Boeing and partner Bluedrop USA recently demonstrated for the U.S. Air Force.
Leveraging mixed and virtual reality, the Special Mission Aviator Ramp Trainer (SMART) device creates a highly realistic training environment for members of the U.S. Air Force’s Special Operations Command (AFSOC).
SMART provides comprehensive training that enhances the competency and proficiency of the crew before getting into the aircraft, which helps to maximize flight time in the air.
The customer was able to see firsthand the technology’s ability to improve readiness and safety during a CV-22 Special Mission Aviator training in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

The training solution also significantly reduces costs for the customer. Using the simulator is less expensive than traditional flight-training hours. Aviators can train more frequently and more extensively with this lower-cost option.
By offering a realistic and immersive training experience, SMART prepares aircrew for various scenarios, including rescue hoist and aerial gunnery operations.

The trainer also provides an innovative service option. By offering not only the device, but the training itself as a service, Boeing will manage all maintenance, sustainment and technology updates, allowing AFSOC teams to remain fully mission-focused.
