US Navy, October 01, 2019 - MAYPORT, Florida by Chief Petty Officer Michael Cole - Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 48 “Vipers” was selected for the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Energy Excellence Award for fiscal year 2019, in the aviation small category.
The Department of the Navy’s Energy Excellence Awards program, announced in August, promotes excellence in the areas of energy security, new technology, innovation, program management, and efficiency across the DON.
HSM-48 was recognized for the SECNAV Energy Excellence award based on overall improvements the command has had on energy security of their operating forces.
“By the Secretary of the Navy awarding our squadron, we are being recognized as a leader up and down the flight line. This recognition demonstrates that our daily efforts conducting flight and maintenance operations efficiently have an impact not just to our organization, but to the Navy as a whole,” said Lt. Cmdr. W.T. Emmons, safety officer, assigned to HSM-48.
Emmons added that HSM-48 assigned Sailors appreciate being recognized for their contributions and positive work ethic.
“This is one more example where each individual in our squadron has been entrusted with assets to use responsibly, collectively being accountable, with the end result bringing credit to our organization. This award recognizes the team effort and pride we have,” said Emmons.
HSM-48 conducts operations from Naval Station Mayport and is assigned to Commander Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing Atlantic and the Type Command, Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic. The squadron operates and maintains 11 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters through the combined efforts of 157 enlisted personnel and 46 officers.
Our primary missions are Surface Warfare, Anti-Submarine Warfare, Electronic Warfare, Command and Control, and Non-Combat Operations. Secondary missions include Amphibious Warfare, Air Warfare, Health Services, Fleet Support – Operations, Intelligence Operations, Logistics, and Naval Special Warfare.
