Esercito Italiano, August 02, 2017 - The Italian Army held a ceremony at Erbil Airport, Iraq to host the change of command of Task Group Griffon on August 1st.
The Army replaced troops from its 7th Aviation Regiment "Vega" with the 5th Aviation Regiment "Rigel" as part of this rotation.
The 7th AVES "Vega" completed a six-month tour achieving 600 flight hours. Their highlight point was supporting coalition forces engaged in the liberation of the city of Mosul, an ISIS stronghold since 2014.
Task Group Griffon employs NH90 TTH transport helicopters along A129 Mangusta gunships. Combatant personnel is provided by the Airmobile Brigade Friuli.
As part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the Italians are the only coalition force in northern Iraq to perform personnel recovery and combat search and rescue missions.
Italy is the second contributor for Inherent Resolve, after the United States, with 1400 military under the national mission "Prima Parthica" launched on October 14, 2014.
