mv Lovat rescue

25-jan-75

united kingdom c 25nm SW of The Lizard

In the early morning of 25 Jan 1975, the 1100 ton mv Lovat was carrying a cargo of coal from Swansea (UK) to Les Sables dOlonne (FR), when the cargo shifted in heavy seas and she began to list to starboard.

Messages were received around 0615 by Lands End Radio and passed to Lands End Coastguard who in turn, contacted RNAS Culdrose and the Penlee Lifeboat.

A Whirlwind HAR.9 was dispatched at dawn and a Sea King Mk.45 of the Pakistan Navy was put on standby, in case conditions deteriorated. The Whirlwind had to cut its winch cable and the Sea King was launched (while a second was brought to readiness - and later launched). 2 survivors of the 13 crew were landed at Penzance Hospital.
