Originally known as EUFORNAV, this is the EU multinational, anti-migrant smuggling operation in the Mediterranean Sea.
After an initial investigative period, Operation Sophia moved to its next phase, where suspicious vessels could be boarded, searched, seized and diverted on the high seas on 7 Oct 2015.
Officially ceased April 01, 2020 and succeeded by Operation IRINI (peace in greek language)
