
Helicopters Carriers Rotary Wing Aircraft at Sea
Modern navies deploy helicopters from small escort vessels to
enormous carriers designed exclusively to be operated with rotary
wing aircrafts.
This page refers to the efforts of several navies for
deploying the helicopters at sea along the years.

Arromanches : (R95)
It was a british 's Colossus class fixed wing aircraft carrier, but
was used as a helicopter carrier with 20 / 25 helicopters on board
from the 60s to 1974 by the french navy
Jeanne d'Arc : (R97)
In service since 1964, used as training ship in peacetime,
can carry up to 14 Aerospatiale Super Frelon helicopters.
Vittorio Veneto : (C550)
Third unit of the Andrea Doria class but strongly modified, begun service in 1970. Can carry up to 9 Agusta-Bell AB212 or
6 Agusta-Sikorsky ASH-3H Sea King.
San Giorgio Class :
Three small amphibious assault ships built in the 80s, could carry
5 / 7 Agusta-Bell AB212
Moskva Class : ( Moskva and Leningrad )
They carry up to 18 Kamov Ka-25 Hormone or Ka-27 Helix,
in service from end of the 60s to 1990
Boxer Class : (WWII modified escort carriers)
In 1952, the WWII escort carrier USS Sicily (CVE 118)
is the first to be transformed in an helicopter carrier for
deploy in Korea where the marines will operate from
their HRSs ( Sikorsky S-55 )
Iwo Jima Class : (LPH)
Tarawa Class : (LHA)
Wasp Class : (LHD)
