Helis, April 29, 2018 - A Spanish Army Aviation (FAMET) helicopter unit embarked on the Juan Carlos I (L 61) amphibious assault ship to be transported to Iraq.
The helicopters are 3 CH-47D Chinook (called HT-17) and 2 AS532 Cougar (HT-27) and will take part of “Operation Inherent Resolve”, the US-led mission against Daesh in Iraq. Spain has been part of this mission since January 2015.
Juan Carlos I will left Rota naval base on May 1st for a 20 days trip to Kuwait. Once there, the Army’ helicopters will fly around 600 km to their new home base at Taji in central Iraq from where they will provide transport to both national and international forces.
The ship will returned immediately back to Rota making port visits to Mumbai (India) and Alexandria (Egypt). Her air group for this deployment will be composed of 4 AV-8B Harrier II V/STOL jets and 2 SH-3D Sea Kings and will be accompanied by frigate Blas de Lezo (F 103)
