Upington Airport began life as the Pierre van Ryneveld grass strip in the 1900s. It received a boost in 1968 when major works began. A larger runway was opened in 1976 which could accommodate Boeing 747 cargo aircraft, bringing mainly German cars to the nearby hot and high vehicle test site. It became an international airport in 1993.
