The base opened in mid 1942 as a Bombardier Training School for the US Army Air Force. It became a USAF base in 1951 and was renamed Webb AFB in May 1952, in use as such until Sep 1977.
In addition to medical helicopter facilities, the site houses the Big Spring Vietnam Veterans Memorial, with a UH-1 Huey and F-4 Phantom on poles to the east. The Hangar 25 Museum (also to the east of the site) completed its recent refurbishment and is due to reopen to visitors in Apr 2025.
