Niagara Falls International Airport (KIAG) and the Niagara Falls Heliport (CNF9) can be confusing when viewed on maps because they appear so close to the U.S.–Canada border that their identifiers sometimes seem to cross national systems. In reality, both facilities are located entirely on U.S. soil in Niagara Falls, New York, but their operations are tied to airspace that is tightly intertwined with Canadian territory. KIAG carries its FAA code as a full-service American airport with runways and terminals, while CNF9 is a heliport code assigned by Transport Canada even though the pad itself is in the United States. The reason for this dual reference is the proximity of flight paths to Canada—helicopters lifting off from CNF9 and aircraft departing KIAG almost immediately enter or skirt Canadian-controlled airspace, so Canada catalogs the sites as well. This unique situation reflects the practical need for cross-border coordination, not a transfer of ownership or jurisdiction.
