Originally conceived as an airship station to counter a Japanese submarine threat along the US West Coast, the US Navy constructed NAS Tillamook with 2 large airship hangars from 1942. NAS Tillamook was stood down in 1948. A fire in 1992 destroyed Hangar A, but Hangar B is used by the nearby Tillamook Air Museum.
