Waiouru is situated near the main NZ Army training grounds. The area was also home to HMNZS Irirangi between 1942 and 1993, which provided HF communications for the RNZN as NAVCOMSTA Waiouru, using the famous callsign ZLO. The naval communications station remains but is now remotely operated.
