Located near Lapu Lapu City on Mactan Island to the south east of Cebu, Mactan-Cebu International Airport is the second international gateway after Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). It opened in the mid 1960s to replace Lahug Airport, which could not be safely expanded because of topographic constraints. It was expanded in 1990. It is reported that the main runways were in poor condition around 2004.
The Benito Ebuen Air Base of the Philippines Air Force is also located on the airport.
